Let me just come out and say this: babies are a big business.
Don’t hate me for saying that.
Hear me out.
The market for baby products is worth billions of dollars.
New products are coming out, and the new parents to be are just more and more overwhelmed.
So what do you do? You buy everything that is recommended for your baby to be comfortable, safe and have the best.
Well, let me just say this too – you’re wasting money.
In this post today I want to share 14 baby products that you really don’t need to waste your money on. And, if you later decide that you need any of these for whatever reason, then buy them later. Don’t buy everything right of away.
MamaRoo
Don’t hate me for saying this, but it’s such a waste of money. Babies grow out of this so quickly it’s not worth investing money in it. It’s fancy and all, but you will only use it for a short amount of time.
Baby wipes warmer
Don’t waste your money on this, unless you plan on carrying this around with you everywhere you go – don’t buy it. Babies are fine with room temperature wipes.
Diaper Genie
Honestly, never really understood the hype about this fancy trash can with scented trash bags. At a newborn stage you are going to go through so many diaper changes, and yes they do stink and all but do you really need another trash can? We live in a condo, and have no space for clutter which is one of the reasons I never got this. And, no I would never put it in baby’s room either. Also, you always have to buy the specific bags and filter for baby genie which gets expensive too. Just put the dirty and stinky diapers in a smaller bag and take a trip outside to throw out the trash 🙂
Baby boy pee-pee teepee
Omg! This one is too funny! It’s pretty well known that boys pee, everywhere, all the time so when you’re changing them the pee pee teepee sounds amazing right? Well, you don’t need it. Always remembering to have it right with you, as if you don’t already have SO much stuff to worry about and then remembering to use it. I have two buys and I have never used it. I just got better at changing their diapers and doing it quickly, always covering the front with the diaper.
Knee pads
Okay so your baby is ready to crawl and you’re afraid the surface is too rough for their little knees so you get the knee pads? Unnecessary. I mean, of course don’t let your babies crawl on rocks but at home on the floor is totally fine. Just remember baby’s don’t have knee caps yet which is how they are able to crawl, unlike you they are made to crawl.
Bottle warmer
I have never used one. I have never warmed my baby’s milk. Always just at room temperature. Why? Because I cannot carry a bottle warmer with me to the park, to a friend’s house, for a walk, etc. you get the point. I always made things more realistic and always asked myself, do I really need more things to do and worry about.
Receiving blankets
I really don’t even know the purpose to be honest. I loved using smaller swaddle blankets as burp clothe, for when Anastasija would drink her milk, and just to have to wipe her. She always snuggles with here. But receiving blankets are big, bulky and really serve no purpose in my opinion. I have yet to find a good reason for them after all three of my babies.
Baby seat
This really bothered me personally because it forces a baby to sit when they haven’t developed the muscle strength and control to hold themselves up. Your baby doesn’t need to sit up before they are ready to do so. I am a firm believer in to each is own, and that babies know exactly when they are ready for what. So let your baby develop on their own when they are ready to sit.
Button up pajamas
I know we don’t always think about everything, and we just cannot. But think about trying to button that button up pajama on your newborn baby at 3:00AM and see how that goes. Instead, I recommend buying zippered pajamas. They are so convenient to use and I promise you’ll thank me later for that. There are tons of cute ones.
Baby wash cloths
Unncessary. Just use your hands and a bit of water to wash your baby for the first few days before the belly button falls off. As you may know you should not give a full bath to your baby until the baby belly button falls off.
Baby detergent
You don’t need a special baby only detergent. The whole point of the baby detergent is that it’s scent-free, dye-free and chemical-free. You can save money buy buying a regular brand, like Mrs.Meyers detergent and use it.
Bottle sterilizer
You don’t need another thin cluttering your kitchen countertop. Just use some boiling water to clean those baby bottles. Personally, I prefer using glass bottles rather than plastic. There are tons of benefits to using glass. Also, I have used this soap to clean baby bottles.
Baby food maker
Again, just another thing to clutter your kitchen counter top and not necessary. Baby food maker is an overpriced version of a blender. If you have a blender, use it. I always used our blender for making purees for the boys and lady.
Baby bathub thermometer
I never had this, and find it completely unencessary to know the exact temperature of your baby’s water. An old trick that my mom used, and taught me is to feel the water with the inside of your wrist, if it’s too hot for you it’s too hot for the baby.
We did not own any of the above products with either one of our babies. However, I am linking here the products we used and found very useful. We live in a condo, so space is limited and we tried to keep it as simple as possible. I also wrote a review on almost everything we did use, I’ll link that too.
The things we found useful
We found the Dock-A-Tot to be very useful and such a great baby lounger. Anastasija loved sleeping in it and you can read all about it here.
We had a mini crib. I would put her in a sleeping bag and then Dock-A-Tot which would be in the mini crib for the night. I loved the Nested Bean sleeping bag and you can read all about why here.
We also used the Oribel Porta Play for when she was able to sit and slightly support herself. She loved to play in it and the nice thing was there were two chairs that came with for big brothers to sit on as well. You can read that post here.
One my favorite high chairs that I have had is the Oribel Cocoon high chair. It works so well for an infant as well as a baby that sits. I wrote a review on that too here. They have several color options.
I know that shoes for babies are useless but when I felt Anastasija was ready for baby shoes I got her Freshly Picked mocs and to this date she still wears them, just bigger size of course.
The stroller I used for Anastasija is the Evenflo, which has the bassinet option. I wish I had this stroller for the boys. It’s comfortable, easily adjusts and rides on smoothly. But the best thing is I can change her in the bassinet no matter where we are, and she can sleep comfortably too.
I have the Lily Jade Co., diaper bag and the Fawn Design diaper bag. Both are so great, each is a personal choice. You can read about Fawn Design diaper bag here and about Lily Jade Co., diaper bag here.
We also had the Lollipop baby camera which I personally love. I have never had a baby camera before, so I cannot compare but I can say that I really liked this one. It was so easy to install, and I had live images of the baby on my phone. You could be outside enjoying your coffee and you’ll be able to watch your baby on your phone. I wrote a review on that as well here.
These are the things I used, and still use. The things that were useful, convenient and made sense for our family. Of course, everyone’s needs are different and some like more baby gear and others less. Whatever your choice is, I just wanted to share these with you.
I 100 percent agree with you on everything that is a waste!! Great post!
Thank you so much for reading Ashlee. There are so many baby products on the market, it can be overwhelming for new parents. Have a great day! 🙂
