As an interior design enthusiast, I have become fully invested in home decorating and have developed simple rules to create a beautiful home. Regardless of your budget, and the size of your home you can create a beautiful home for yourself. You have to think in this order — layout, proportion and purpose.
Layout
What is the layout of your home? Like what space do you have to work with? Then, what do you want to achieve in your home? Use your layout to design the space. Your layout will give you direction in what you can create. You may want a large rectangular dining table but if your space calls for a smaller table, go with the smaller table. You don’t want to overcrowd the space.
Proportion
What does proportion have to do with design? Think about it this way, if you have an open layout space but want to define your living space from your dining space, then you have to think about the entire space as a whole and pick pieces that will work together. You’ll have focal points from each angle, and you want them to be proportionate to one another.
Purpose
Last but not least, think about purpose. Your home should have a purpose. I know what you’re thinking, duh, it has a purpose. But, what I mean is think about what purpose do you want your home to have. You may use your formal dining space as a playroom. You may use your home office as a playroom. You have to make it work for you and your family.

Now that we have these three covered, let’s dive into some simple rules to create a beautiful home. Obviously, you can do whatever you want in your home but if you want some guidance read through these 5 simple rules I have followed in our home.

5 Rules to Create a Beautiful Home
1. Cohesive
You want to make sure your home is cohesive, from one space to another. Let the color palettes flow, let the fabrics repeat and allow for layers to happen. Create a foundation using neutrals. Don’t be afraid to mix wood tones and metal finishes, just continue to repeat them throughout your home. Mix old and new. Tell your story.

2. Timeless
Invest in timeless pieces rather than trendsending. If you are debating what to splurge on, let it be pieces that are timeless, that you will not want to replace in a few months. For me, it’s a dining table, sideboard, sofa, media cabinet, lighting, etc.. Don’t buy random decor or furniture simply because it is cute. Think about where you’ll use it before you buy it. If you don’t have a spot for it, you don’t need it. I am looking to upgrade our Great room light with a beautiful chandelier that I will have for years to come. It’s not something I want to replace as soon as a new one comes out.

3. Mood
You need to look at your overall home, and create a mood for it. You want your space to make you happy, to spark joy. Set the tone and mood by using accent pieces that put a smile on your face. Bring in natural elements like branches, live plants, stone, wood, etc. These natural elements create a serene, grounding environment. Your home is a mood, a mood you create by visualizing pieces that fit.

4. Lived-in Home
Layer textiles and textures to warm up the space and create a cozy environment you want to spend time in. Add throw pillows, throw blankets, your favorite books to flip through and pieces that bring you happiness. For me it’s a throw blanket I can wrap around me, a couch I sink into and a cup of coffee I set on a side table to enjoy.

5. Make sure you love it!
This may sound cliche but make sure you love it. Design with a purpose and use meaningful pieces to style your home. Never let others dictate your happiness. It’s nice to be inspired. It’s nice to inspire. But, always remember that your home should be a reflection of you.
